Red Hill Red Flesh Papaya is 100% Australian, grown in North Queensland’s tropics. The MacKay family for 4 generations, since 1945, has farmed bananas around Tully. Commencing in 2009 the family selected this Red Flesh Papaya variety for its great taste and amazing health benefits and has managed the farming and development under the Red Hill Brand.
Red Hill Taste: The variety has a tropical sweet flavour with its red to orange flesh being described as creamy and smooth. It is mainly eaten fresh with minimal preparation other than peeling and removing the seeds, however there are many dishes and recipes listed below.
Papaya History: Papaya is a unique tree in that it produces fruit every month of the year starting from about 10 months after planting till cut down. Originating as a native plant of Central America it has been revered by American Indians for its remarkable health attributes. Spanish and Portuguese explorers took seeds to many tropical lands making Papaya a fruit today that is enjoyed in tropical resorts the world over.
Is Papaya the same as Papaw or Pawpaw?: No - although they are from the same fruit family they are very different. Red Hill is has a red/orange flesh and is sweet, smooth and great tasting. Papaw has Yellow flesh and is considered less palatable. We grow the Red Hill variety as it tastes great and has amazing health benefits.
Papaya cultivation spread beyond Central America as explorers carried seeds to other tropical climates so spread the diversity of recipes and uses.
Ripe fruit is mainly eaten fresh with minimal preparation other than peeling and removing the seeds (possibly with a squeeze of lime). The many cuisines of South Eastern Asia have developed the diversity of Red Flesh Papaya as a sweet desert or drink mixer as well as the holistic health and nutritional food. Green or unripe Red Hill fruit can be used in curries, salads and stews. In some cultures the seeds are dried and used as a pepper substitute and the leaves are used in herbal teas with a focus of nutrition and healing.
